Press statement on import strategy

VNG AG

Ulf Heitmüller, CEO of VNG AG, comments on the hydrogen import strategy

“For the year 2030, the German government is projecting an annual hydrogen requirement of 95 to 130 TWh in Germany to support the decarbonisation of industry. However, domestic production will not be sufficient to cover the resulting demand for hydrogen. Large quantities of hydrogen will therefore have to be imported. Accordingly, we welcome the commitment by the German government to a hydrogen import strategy. It is a positive signal that the hydrogen import strategy also explicitly integrates the import of low-carbon/decarbonised hydrogen. Low-carbon hydrogen is playing an important role in the transition phase leading to complete decarbonisation of the energy supply. It can already be produced and imported in large quantities. This makes it an important factor in ramping up the hydrogen economy. Now that the strategy has created clarity in relation to German government’s guidelines and overarching goals for hydrogen imports, it is important to further develop the framework conditions to increase the demand for green hydrogen as a prerequisite for imports.”
